For the Love of my Life, Zuni

Kerschberger's Zuni, aka Nolte von der Wienerau

In Loving Memory to the Greatest of dogs, my Pandora box and teacher of what a German Shepherd should be...

 There can only be one Zuni, ever....

Zuni passed unexpectedly on October 8th 2008

Nolte von der Wienerau -  SG, BH, OFA Good, and dual purpose! Zuni, was the LAST breeding Wienerau in the USA!  & the love of my life!  Zuni produced superb working quality dogs, with excellent temperaments.   He was my constant 24/7 companion from the day he arrived here on August 17th, 2000 until his passing.  I took him on a vacation to Europe with me, basically I rarely left home without him.  It was because of this phenomenal dog that I started to look into breeding him.  People would continiously ask me about him and the breed in general.  Never had they seen such a balanced dog in their life.

Born August 22nd 1997 at the famous Wienerau Kennel in Viernheim Germany, then was given to Georg Dobler of Wackersdorf Germany for payment to train Zuni's Dam V6 Noscha von der Wienerau to her Schutzhund 2 title.  There, at three months old, and due to a shortage of space and time on Georg's part, Zuni was boarded just across the Czech border until he was 12 months of age, to then be returned to Georg to start his Schutzhund Training.

Well, Zuni was 'stolen'  (both Georg and I think he was sold as he was such a great working dog) and disappeared.  Until I, Gina, started to look for a personal protection trained dog on the internet in July of 2000.

I purchased him from Gerard Dashorst of K9 Dog Centre in Holland, who scouts through all of Europe finding great working dogs and then sells them to police and military departments throughout the world.  All Gerard remembers is that Zuni was purchased somewhere in the Czech Republic, and was very well trained thus he brought him to his Dutch Kennel.

Zuni arrived in the evening on August 17th, 2000 at Colorado Springs airport and started to receive his first from the many thousands of compliments immediately upon leaving his crate.   His arrival;

One of the great unforgettable moments of my life....

Another GS arrived at that time and the buyer of said dog literally tried to convince me that she felt that they had shipped her the wrong dog and that Zuni (then named Sonny) was to be hers!   I told her NO, I recognize him from his pictures and my name and info are on the crate and bolted out of the airport as quickly as I could get that gigantic crate out of there with Zuni on the leash.

 The love of my life, an obsession was born

The 5 hour trip back from the Colorado Springs airport were uneventful and I was so at ease.  A stop to fill up at a gas station at night usually puts me on alert, but this time with the window rolled down and Zuni's large head sticking out of the window, made me feel oh so fantastic.   There  a compliment from another passer by 'M'am that is one nice German Shepherd you got there'  made me smile from ear to ear and feel pride for the first time in my life for having such a great dog in my life...

Our first 6 weeks were bumpy though, don't get me wrong.  Of course, all of it was my fault, not his.  I had no idea about what a great dog was about and had to learn to ease up, bond with him and then all of it was a breeze.
